No-exam life insurance

Who qualifies, what accelerated underwriting entails, and what happens if you don't qualify for it.

Numerous carriers now provide accelerated underwriting: for applicants within set age and amount thresholds, they make a decision on the application itself, prescription history, driving records, and other data rather than requiring a paramedical exam. Decisions sometimes come back the same calendar day. Each quote here indicates whether an exam is required, may be required, or is not expected for that particular coverage.

What it changes

No medical exam does not mean no underwriting. The carrier will review and verify your answers, and a policy issued based on inaccurate information can be challenged during the first two years. If the carrier's own records turn up concerns, it may still request testing; you're in control at that point—you can proceed or stop.

Who tends to qualify

Generally, this covers applicants under around 60, requesting coverage amounts up to what the carrier designates as their accelerated limit, with a clean health history and no tobacco use in at least one year. Some carriers welcome recent lab work from your doctor as a substitute for a fresh exam.

When an exam is required, expect a medical professional to visit your home or workplace in the Long Beach area for approximately 20 to 30 minutes at no charge to you. Strong health often translates to better class ratings from exam findings, which can work in your favor.
